"Mexican bantamweight champ Jesus (Chucho) Castillo won a unanimous 12-round decision over Yoshio Nakane Sunday night, battering the Japanese around the ring at will in the final rounds. Castillo had the upper hand from the opening bell, flooring Nakane with a hard right in the 1st round. Castillo pounded away at Nakane's body in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and in the 4th opened a cut over Nakane's eye. Castillo bloodied his nose and opened the cut further in the 6th, and in the 7th Nakane was bleeding profusely. By the 8th round Nakane's right eye was closed and Castillo battered the game Japanese from one end of the ring to the other, but could not knock him out." -United Press International

  • This bout was billed as an eliminator for the right to meet Lionel Rose for the world bantamweight championship.
