Donaire was able to outbox his opponent early with his quick hands, but Mthalane was beginning to land more and more as the fight progressed. However, the fight changed suddenly in round 6 as a cut developed over Mthalane's eye. Mthalane's aggression suddenly waned, and he was taken over to see the doctor shortly after. As the cut was on Mthalane's eyelid, the fight was stopped on the advice of the ring doctor. The cut was deemed to have been caused by a punch, and Donaire was awarded the victory.
