"Jose Torres hopes to shake off more of his ring rust and fight his way to a middleweight title fight after he gained a unanimous decision over Jose Gonzalez in a bruising brawl at MSG Friday night. There were no knockdowns but lots of holding, butting and tugging in the 10 rounder. Torres gained the verdict by winning four of the first five rounds from his aggressive but ineffective opponent and putting on spurts in the 6th and 9th rounds." -Associated Press

• In order to get the fight with Gonzalez, Torres offered Gonzalez the TV monies of $10,000 in lieu of 50% of the net gate. With 4,600 in attendance and a gross gate of almost $12,000, Torres wound up with app. $5,000 rather than the $7,500 he could have had for an even split.
