"Ricardo Arredondo of Mexico, scoring points patiently through the early rounds, knocked out Japanese challenger Susumu Okabe in the 12th round Friday to retain his WBC junior lightweight title. The fight was comparatively slow, except for occasional bursts of exchanges when the champion, using his longer reach to advantage, parried the attacks of the rugged Okabe like a matador facing a bull. The 6th was the best round of the fight when the champion punished the Japanese with left and right hooks to the head. Arredondo did not let up his attack from the 6th against the tiring challenger until the knockout. The knockout came at 1:39 of the 12th after Arredondo had pounded his challenger with endless hooks to the body and head." -Associated Press
