The bout was titled "The Civil War" as it featured two northern Nevadans.

Gilbert began circling Camacho-like without throwing much. Brinkley pursued until landing the bout's biggest blow in round four, a right which floored Gilbert and apparantly broke his nose. From then it was a blood fest, with Gilbert's white trunks becoming at least 40% drenched, while the ringside announcers were splashed. Gilbert scored a forehead gash in round one, and from round five on, an angry puff appeared under Brinkley's right eye which swelled badly and showed at least three different colors. The match was a mess, in the tradition of the hard fought battles of decades long ago.
