"The controversy of the night came in the first bout of the evening between Beltway super middleweights Henry "Hurricane" Mayes of Baltimore, MD and Willis "The Prophet" Lockett of Takoma Park, MD.

In the first round of the scheduled six-round contest, Mayes hammered Lockett with a vicious right hand. Lockett stumbled around the ring, but he didn't fall. Referee Billy Johnson intervened and gave Lockett a standing eight-count.

That proved to be a mistake because, under the rules of the DC Boxing and Wrestling Commission, there is no standing eight-count. The stoppage also resulted in Lockett getting some rest.

This allowed Lockett to come back strong and tee off on Mayes in the second round with lefts and rights. Johnson stopped the bout for good at 1:34 of the round, giving Lockett an apparent victory.

But by the end of the evening, commission officials ruled the bout a no-contest. Lockett's record remains at 10-6-5, four KO's while Mayes's record stays at 7-6-2, four KO's."
