Mosley, a 4-1 underdog, went right after Margarito in the first round with some crisp body work and followed up with punches upstairs. The two fighters stood toe to toe with Mosley landing the quicker punches. Mosley used his jab to keep Margarito at bay in the second roundand continued to go after the body, as Margarito tried to make it an inside fight, but Mosley was winning with his quicker hands. In the third, Margarito began backing Mosley against the ropes to land some hard shots. Mosley came back to steal the round with right hand power punches. In the final ten seconds of round four, Mosley caught Margarito with two right hands that appeared to buckle his knees. Round five was more of Mosley landing right hands and combinations to the body, as blood began to flow from Margarito's mouth.

In round six, Mosley knocked Margarito around with right hands, lefts to the body and blocked every counter punch. Margarito appeared to be getting tired by this point and his face showed a lot of frustration. Margarito began to let his punches flow in the seventh round, but Mosley used his defense and counter punching to outbox Margarito. In the eight round, Margarito was coming on but a multiple combination of power punches had Margarito in serious trouble. Mosley followed up with more power punches and sent Margarito down and almost out. Margarito barely made it to his as he made it back to his corner. Prior to the ninth round, Margarito's corner nearly stopped the fight, but let him go on. Mosley continued the beating in the ninth as Margarito was pinned against the ropes. As Mosley poured on the punches, the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

Controversy

Before the fight, Officials found what one doctor described as plaster hidden in the wrapped hands of Margarito, leading to accusations that Margarito may have been trying to cheat. According to Judd Burstein, the attorney for Mosley, Margarito had wet pads in the wrapping. Mosley's doctor, Robert Olvera, likened the material to the type of plaster used to make casts. Burstein said he seized the pad removed from the wrapping and another pad found in Margarito's dressing room. Both were placed in a sealed box that was given to Dean Lohuis of the California Boxing Commission for further study. After the suspicious pads were removed from Margarito's dressing room, the boxer's hands were rewrapped and the fight went off on time.[1] On January 28, Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, had their licenses temporarily suspended by the California State Athletic Commission.[2]
