After the bell which ended the first round, Reyes hit Hinojosa with a punch to the back of the head. Hinojosa fell and lay on the canvas more than the required five minutes to resume fighting. Hinojosa, although alert, eventually was placed on a stretcher and transferred to a local hospital.

In the confusion which followed, the ring announcer incorrectly announced in Spanish that "the fight was suspended." The immediate perception was that he meant a "no contest." Don Hazelton, executive director of the Miccosukee Boxing Commission, declared that Reyes was disqualified for the illegal punch and Hinojosa was declared the winner.
