"A tremendous right hook to the side of the jaw delivered in the opening seconds of a scheduled eight round contest by Bill Wainwright, Gresley, floored its recipient Vic Jones, Buxton, for a count of five. On rising, Jones carried the fight to his opponent, but was sent floundering into the ropes when another right hook struck him on the side of the head. After taking a further count of nine, Jones was obviously in distress, and despite his expression of willingness to continue, the referee halted the proceedings just before the termination oh the first round and awarded the verdict to Wainwright."
