"Julio Cesar Chavez stopped Mario Martinez at the end of the 8th round to capture the WBC super-featherweight championship. Chavez dominated the scheduled 12 round bout at the Olympic Auditorium from the start. He consistently beat Martinez to the punch and rocked him with lefts and rights as the two stood toe-to-toe in every round. In the 8th, Chavez tagged Martinez with a hard left and chased the reeling fighter around the ring, pounding away with lefts and rights. As the bell sounded, referee John Thomas jumped between the fighters and signaled the end of the bout. A staggering Martinez bled heavily from the nose and from a cut over his right eye. There were no knockdowns." -United Press International

  • Hector Camacho had vacated the title two months earlier to move into the lightweight division.

Purse: Julio César Chávez earned 30,000 dollars for his first world title fight [1]
