Notes
- It would be the second of only two bouts El Gran Campeon Mexicano Chavez would hold at the mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden, the other one being when he knocked out Refugio Rojas in seven as part of the Hector Camacho-Edwin Rosario fight's undercard.
- This one formed part of the undercard where James Smith took the WBA Heavyweight title with a first round knockout of Tim Witherspoon.
- Chavez was 54-0 with 48 knockouts and already seen as the greatest Mexican champion and one of Latin America's greatest ever, and he was defending his WBC Junior Lightweight title against Puerto Rico's Laporte, 27-6 with 14 knockouts and the former WBC Featherweight Champion.
- Round three was give and take with excellent close-range exchanges throughout. Laporte momentarily stunned Chavez near the end of the eighth, a round Chavez had otherwise controlled. Chavez dominated the final round, pushing the tiring Laporte back and landing numerous hard punches.
- While Chavez in no way deserved to lose the fight, Laporte proved, for the first time, that Chavez was not invincible.
- Chavez retained the crown by five points on one scorecard and by only a single point on the other two.
