Filipino Sylvester Lopez and Korea’s Jongnam Park battled for the vacant WBC International super flyweight title at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City (Lungsod ng Pasig - Metro Manila ) on 5th April 2009. The fight was promoted by Elorde Sports International and Jun Sarreal in coordination with Rizal Governor Junjun Ynares. All Rotarians of District 3800 under Governor Ferdi Fuentes and Governor Rudy San Fellip provided with their special support.
Sylvester Lopez floored South Korean co-challenger Jong-Nam Park four times (three times in the first round and one again in the 8th ) on route to a knockout win in the eight round to take possession of the previously vacant WBC International superflyweight title. Lopez did a Manny Pacquiao by sending Jong to the canvas thrice in the 1st round and Jong did a Juan Manuel Marquez by getting up each time he gets knocked down. The korean even held his own in the 3rd and 4th rounds and outlanded Lopez who turned passive and tentative. Lopez regained control starting with the 5th round and outscored Jong with shots to the body and head finishing Jong in the 8th to win his first international title. New Zealand’s referee Bruce MacTavish waived the fight off at 2:16 of round eight.
The 21-year old boxer of promoter Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde Jr. dropped his five year senior opponent, who suffered his first loss, with a left hook to the face and then with a left hand shot to the side of the body. Park was pinned against the ropes and sent down once again after Lopez caught him with barrage of head and body shots. As Park was cheered on by a small gathering of Koreans led by the president of the Korean Boxing Association Kim Chul Kee and the manager of former WBC super flyweight champion In Joo Cho and WBC featherweight champion Injin Chi, Kusung Lee, he grew in confidence and caught Lopez with a couple of hard rights to get back into the fight in rounds 4 and 5th. In the eight, a four punch combination that was punctuated with the most fatal left hook to the body abruptly dropped Park on his knees and referee Bruce McTavish didn’t take care of starting the protection count and just waived the fight off. The fight was stopped at two minutes 16 seconds into round eight. At the time of stoppage, Lopez was comfortably ahead on three judges' scorecards. Rey Danseco saw it 69-61, lawyer Epi Almeda had it 68-62 while Korean Jae Bung Kim scored it 67-63, all in favor of Lopez. He improved his overall record to 9-2-1 with 6 victories inside the distance in his two-year and six month pro-career. National champ Park (6-1-0, 5 KOs ) had the best moment in round 4 when he hurt Lopez with a straight right to the face. But he missed so many punches when Lopez effectively waved and ducked.
Bruce McTavish (New Zealand) as referee; Attorney Epifanio ALMEDA (PH) , Rey Danseco (PH) and Park Nam Chul (Korea) as judges. WBC Board member Eric Buhain was Supervisor.
The new champion was born on 26th October 1987 in the Philippines. For Park this was the first professional defeat. Park was coming off a 2nd round knockout win over Byung Kwan Lim last May 23 , while Lopez had won all his four fights last year beginning with a 2nd round TKO over Romnick Rapista on May 3 followed up by an 8th round unanimous decision over Rene Nival on September 7. He then scored a stunning 1st round knockout over Jongjong Gagante on October 25 before winding up the year with a 2nd round TKO over Nelson Sungahid. The championship belt was awarded to Lopez by Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain assisted by former Rizal governor Casimiro ‘Ito’ Ynares and Korean Boxing Commission president Kee who congratulated Lopez on his fine win.
