Steve Wheeler 197 lbs beat Kareem Wilson 196 lbs by DQ at 0:18 in round 2 of 4

In arguably the most unusual result I’ve seen in a sport that known for its craziness, Cruiserweight Steve “Show Stealer” Wheeler of Baltimore made his pro debut a successful one after eventually being awarded a disqualification victory over Kareem Wilson 0-3 of Washington, DC. This however was after tons of confusion.

After boxing and moving well to clearly take the opening round, Wheeler stunned Wilson with a punch in the second, which lead to a clinch. After referee John Gradowski called for a break, Wilson landed a few more shots and was taken to a neutral corner. While a warning or a point deduction appeared evident, Gradowski waived the bout off, telling the ringside officials it was a TKO for Wheeler.

This obscure ruling not only left me as well as the other ringside officials confused but the fans booing and even the victorious Wheeler questioning the outcome. My requests to speak to Gradowski were denied however, Maryland State Athletic Commissioner Pat Panella later changed the decision to a disqualification. While a disqualification makes more sense than a TKO, there was absolutely no reason the fight couldn’t have continued.
