Former boxing champion Lupe Aquino lost a junior middleweight title fight and was arrested by Detroit police on vehicular manslaughter charges at ringside following Thursday night's bout.
Aquino showed up for the fight despite an arrest warrant issued after he skipped a California court appearance Wednesday on two counts of vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.
He lost to John David Jackson when he failed to answer the bell in the eighth round. Soon after, Detroit police took him to their headquarters.
"The fight I was fighting was outside of the ring," Aquino said before his arrest. "I was never into the fight. My mind was never on Jackson.
"I was shocked when I found out they would let me fight," said Aquino behind dark glasses that hid his swollen left eye. "I really feel bad about what happened. It's something I'll never forget."
Aquino, 25, a native of Mexico who lives in Santa Paula, Calif., faces two counts each of vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving in an Aug. 14 accident that killed two passengers in the car he was driving.
Aquino is the World Boxing Council's No. 3 super welterweight contender and held the title briefly last year. [1]
Note
Aquino pleaded no contest to the charge of vehicular manslaughter on September 8, 1989, and was sentenced to six years in prison. [2]
