In a brief but exciting televised Showbox fight, heavyweight Tony Grano of Hebron, Connecticut, scored a fourth round knockout over Travis Kauffman of Reading, Pennsylvania. Grano, now 16-1-1 with 13 kayos, and Kauffman, now 18-1 with 15 kayos, did not show much defense the whole night. The first round looked even, with both fighters landing alot of straight right hands and left hooks. Kaufmann won the second and third rounds big, by landing alot of power shots and landing more punches overall. In the first two minutes of the fourth, Kauffman came out blasting and 'emptied his guns' and tried to finish Grano, and punched himself out in the process. Grano took a bad beating for those two minutes, and looked ready to go-but he weathered the storm by first landing an intentional low blow to stop the action and force a rest period, and then after getting hit a few more times and stumbling around the ring, spit out his mouthpiece to buy himself time to recover again. When the action resumed a second time, suddenly Grano emptied his guns. Kauffman went down from a left-right combination. Kauffman's glove touched the floor, but no knockdown was called, so Grano grabbed Kauffman under the neck and threw him down to the canvas, where Kauffman was counted out at 2:56 of the fourth round. A review of the fight footage shows Kauffman with his right glove on the canvas (which constitutes a knockdown and must initiate a count) at 2:46 of the fourth. Grano then leans his left elbow behind Kauffman's neck, and then grabs Kauffman around the neck from behind with his left hand and throws him to the canvas at 2:49. Grano's action could not have been intentional, since referee Wayne Hedgepeth did not see the knockdown. Since a fighter cannot be struck after he is down, the outcome of this bout is being appealed with the California Boxing Commission.
