Alfonso Gomez 146 lbs beat Jesus Soto Karass 147 lbs by TD-U at 2:14 in round 6 of 10

Alfonzo Gomez won this welterweight bout for the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title, which went to the scorecards due to a bloody cut over the right eye caused by an accidental headbutt in round 2 which ultimately impaired his vision. Although Jesus Karass lost points in rounds 3 and 4 for low blows, some headbutts appeared intentional and he could have lost points for them too. Boxing turned to grappling in what became a bloody, ugly affair. Gomez, 21-4-2, 10 kos, Whittier, California, came forward all night landing a variety of jabs and power shots and was a far better technical fighter than Karass, 24-4-3, 16 kos, who fought backing up as a counterpuncher but whose dirty tactics proved costly. Without the two point deduction, this bout would have been a technical draw. Karass tried unsuccessfully to take advantage of the cut.
