It was a comfortable 15 rounds win when the Scot John McCormack defended his European middleweight title in Frankfurt against the unbeaten German Heinz Freytag. A crowd of 8000 saw their home favorite being gradually outboxed. McCormack was down on his knees in the 10th but rose without taking a count. Freytag, a 30- year old carpenter from Offenbach, never figured out the southpaw style of McCormack. By the end of the fight Freytag's left eye was closed, and he had a cut under his right. According to Boxing News January 12, 1962 it was a fight without thrills or incidents.
