Hasegawa was stunned by a left hook from Montiel. He staggered back to the ropes where he became trapped by an onslaught from Montiel, unable to defend himself, prompting a stoppage.
According to WBO, this was indeed sanctioned Montiel's title defense (unification bout). However, the country of Japan did not recognize the IBF or WBO as an organization at that point of time.
