- Title had been vacated by Anthony Small in order to focus on his European title ambitions.
- Thomas McDonagh and Gary Woolcombe were initially slated to fight for the vacant title. When Woolcombe suffered a hand injury and pulled out of the fight, the promoter reached out to Lusambya, who accepted to step in on short notice. However, McDonagh declined to accept him as an opponent and Watson finally got the opportunity to fight for the title.
