Tavoris Cloud 175 lbs beat Glen Johnson 173 lbs by UD in round 12 of 12

In his first bout in a year, 21-0 unbeaten Tavoris Cloud retained the IBF light heavyweight tile with a 12 round unanimous decision win over top contender Glen Johnson and moved a step closer to a unification match with the winner of the Jean Pascal (WBC title holder) versus Chad Dawson fight that is to be held in Montreal, Canada on August 14th. Cloud had Johnson in serious trouble with a right-right-left combination in the fifth round, but Johnson recovered. Johnson was clearly the busier fighter, throwing more punches overall by the punch count, but Cloud threw and landed more power shots. Johnson felt he had won the fight and felt he blocked most power shots thrown by Cloud. Johnson, 41, showed an excellent defence, but failed in his attempt to become the oldest light heavyweight champion since 40 year old Bob Fitzsimmons defeated George Gardner in 1903. Brief controversy over Don King fighter Cloud entering the ring with 10 ounce black Everlast gloves, when contractual agreement called for both fighters to wear red 10 ounce Everlast gloves, causing the Missouri Boxing Commission to later confiscate Cloud's gloves for precautionary inspection after the bout, but the gloves did not appear to be tampered with or affect the outcome of this bout. Despite Johnson's claim that he won more rounds than Cloud, and the fact that the bout appeared close, Cloud appeared to win this decision by landing the more effective blows. Scoring in this clean bout appeared to be fair and correct. Cloud's personal choice of the colour of gloves did not affect the outcome of the bout. The 'Road Warrior', Johnson, fell to 50-14-2.
