  • Davis entered having lost having lost his six previous bouts (four by knockout) dating back to November of 2008.
  • Fight was on the untelevised undercard of Amir Khan vs. Marcos Rene Maidana.
  • This was the second fight in a row, and at least the third time in his career, that Guzman failed to make the contract weight.

Bout Summary

Davis went down in the opening minute of the bout from what was ruled to be from a push by Robert Byrd. Davis complained to being hit in the back of the head. A flurry with a pair of body shots put Davis down in a heap at 1:15 of Round 1. The second body shot landed on the trunk line of Davis. Byrd ruled the knockdown to be a result of a low blow and allowed Davis time to recover. After a 50 second break, action continued. Guzman battered Davis for the remainder of the round. In the early seconds of Round 2, Guzman pinned Davis into a corner and threw a barrage as Davis was covered and wholly defensive. At that, Davis's corner came up on the ring apron and threw in the towel and the referee waved an end to the bout.

No Contest

Following the bout, Guzman tested positive for the diuretic Furosemide. He later admitted to the Nevada State Athletic Commission to using the substance and was fined $3,750 (25% of his $15,000 purse) and suspended for eight months from the date of the fight. As a result, Guzman was also released from his promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions. [1]
