John Henry Lewis 168 lbs beat Sam Terrin 178 lbs by KO in round 3 of 10

  • Date: 1931-03-11
  • Location: O.K. Hall, Prescott, Arizona, USA
  • With his newly-wed wife looking on from ringside, Terrin died after being floored by a right to the heart and a left to the head. The Prescott Evening Courier reported that Terrin had initially dropped to his hands and knees from the blows, but that he had sagged to the canvas halfway through the count. When Terrin failed to regain conscience, the arena was cleared and the Prescott Volunteer Fire department was called in to administer oxygen to the fighter, who failed to respond. Following the fight 16-year old John Henry Lewis was taken into custody, but was cleared the next day when an autopsy revealed that Terrin had entered the ring having an abnormal heart condition. In the weeks preceding the bout, Terrin's mother had died and his brother Jess, also a professional fighter, had committed suicide.
