"Al Roth, New York lightweight, was firmly entrenched today as the No. 1 challenger for Tony Canzoneri's lightweight title. Roth gained that spot last night with a decisive 10-round decision over Davey Day of Chicago, recognized as leading challenger by the Illinois Boxing Commission. The NYSAC had agreed to recognize the winner of last night's bout as a leading challenger. Roth won the honor by taking 7 rounds from the Chicago battler. He almost dropped Day in the 1st with a short right jolt to the jaw and twice after that almost put him on the floor." -Middletown Times Herald
- Roth received a shot at Canzoneri's title in his next bout due to this win.
