"The most atrocious decision in the long history of pro boxing in Syracuse appeared slated for correction at the hands of Bob Christenberry, NY State Athletic Commissioner, and his aides within the next few days. Until the case is reviewed in New York City, Carmen Basilio of Canastota, voted a gift verdict over Chuck Davey of Lansing, Mich., can continue the argument after the bout at the War Memorial Stadium last night. Despite the eye cuts suffered by Davey, ringside patrons saw that many of the right hands thrown by Basilio were picked off by Davey, while playing a steady tattoo of right jabs on Carmen. The decision for Basilio was so far out of the realm of justice that it could end promotion of the game here for several years." -Syracuse Herald-Journal

  • The original scores of the bout were: Judge Harvey Smith - 5-4-1 Davey, Judge Dick Fazio - 5-5 in rounds but had it for Basilio 6-5 on supplemental points. Finally Referee Joe Palmer had it 3-3-4 in rounds with Basilio the winner 8-6 on supplemental points.
  • The win for Basilio was voided by Deputy Commissioner Thomas Graulty when he found referee Joe Palmer's card had not tallied any supplemental points in rounds 2 and 9, which he had scored for Davey, thus turning in an incomplete card, which would have been scored a draw had he done so.
  • On June 2nd, State Athletic Commissioner Bob Christenberry declared the bout a draw and suspended referee Joe Palmer indefinitely.
  • Palmer had stopped the bout in Basilio's favor in the 10th round with a minute to go due to cuts on both of Davey's eyes, but he was overruled by Dr. Charles Heck, who accepted full responsibility with the time remaining.
  • Dr. Heck sewed three stitches over Davey's left eye and two stitches over his right eye and indicated it would be 30 days before Davey could box again.
  • Davey was already scheduled to fight Chico Vejar in Detroit on June 11th, but the bout had to be postponed until June 25th to give Davey a chance to heal.
