"Carmen Basilio, 147 1/2, the top-ranking welterweight from Canastota, dropped Carmine Fiore, 148 1/2, twice in the 1st round enroute to a decisive 10-round victory in MSG last night. It was Basilio's Garden debut and he made a solid hit with the small crowd of about 2,000 as well as those viewing the network telecast. He had a good foil in the Brooklynite who rallied strongly in the 8th and 9th rounds after taking a sound drubbing. Basilio decked the aggressive Fiore with left hooks to the button. Fiore was given the mandatory eight-count twice and just managed to evade a third knockdown that would have cost him the fight under NY rules. Basilio hammered away without letup until the 8th when he seemed to tire. He had Fiore bleeding from the nose, mouth and a cut under the chin, while he himself, bled from the nose. In the 8th and 9th, Fiore nailed Basilio several times with his dangerous hooks to earn those rounds and the cheers of the fans." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 7-3 Basilio
- Basilio claimed he was promised a title shot at the winner of the upcoming welterweight championship contest between Kid Gavilan and Johnny Saxton. However, it was Tony DeMarco who received the title opportunity.
