Franklin Gonzalez Versus Eddie Hyland Junior Middleweight Bout
Welterweight and junior middleweight veteran Franklin Gonzalez scored a minor upset with a unanimous decision victory over Eddie Hyland on the undercard of the Team Snooki Patrick Hyland versus Emmanuel Lucero seven bout card at Resorts Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Gonzalez, whose resume includes bouts with Luis Collazo, David Estrada, Dmitriy Salita and Antwone Smith, weighed in at 149 but appeared less in the ring. Hyland, a former 2009 IBF Super Featherweight titleholder, weighed in close to 158, a good 30 pounds over his fight weight, and appeared outof shape. Nonetheless it was a close bout, with Gonzalez giving and Hyland taking and fighting back. Hyland taunted Gonzalez numerous times, who responded by fighting Hyland's fight on the inside and never letting up. Gonzalez won this bout by throwing and landing more punches by volume. Hyland had a big heart and was tough as nails, but was not prepared, and appeared to be attempting to ride the coattails of the event which featured the three Irish Hyland brothers. Consensus at ringside was Eddie Hyland was a fine fighter, but would be better off returning to his natural fight weight of 128 pounds or less where he was a champion. Gonzalez, who was in shape, wasn't fooled. Some press thought Hyland won, but it was close.
