Gil King vs. Crispin Benitez
Gil King 147 lbs lost to Crispen Benitez 150 lbs by TKO at 1:45 in round 5 of 10
- Date: 1970-07-16
- Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
- Referee: John Thomas
"Crispin Benitez, 150, Mexico City, recovered from an 18-second knockdown, to stop previously unbeaten 'Irish' Gil King, 147, Akron, Ohio, in the 5th round of a wild melee at the Olympic Auditorium. After taking the 1st round, King looked like the winner midway in the 2nd round when he sent Benitez through the ropes with a left hook to the body. Apparently in great pain, the Mexican lad made no effort to get up and should have been counted out. To the surprise of the fans and King's manager, Suey Welch, referee John Thomas pulled Benitez back into the ring. Once back, Chris crumbled to the canvas. Finally, after 18 seconds, he made it on two feet and the fight continued. Benitez collected a second wind and caught up with the fast-tiring King in the 5th. A solid left hook floored Gil for an eight-count. When he got to his feet, referee Thomas stopped the bout." -Ring Magazine, October 1970 issue
