Tony Canzoneri 132 lbs lost to Sammy Mandell 135 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"Tony Canzoneri, attempting to achieve what Johnny Kilbane, Johnny Dundee and many other featherweight champions failed to do, challenged for the lightweight title in the Chicago Stadium last night, but received nothing but a neat boxing lesson from Sammy Mandell after 10 stirring rounds. Mandell won mainly by speed and boxing ability. After losing the first two rounds because of Tony's rushes and right-hand attacks that caught him off guard, the champion calmly cuffed his rival with his long lefts and choppy rights to pile up a decisive margin. Tony had a chance only in those first two rounds, and it was the best chance any challenger ever had against Mandell, but he couldn't follow it up. Mandell's accurate left hand fired sharply and true to the challenger's face and at the final gong Tony's face was well puffed up." -Associated Press

  • Although he never bled, Canzoneri entered this bout with a cut that he picked up in New York 3 weeks earlier in his first fight as a lightweight against Phil McGraw.

Post-fight comments

  • "I just couldn't get started. I was cold at the start and not until the final round did I feel anything like my old self. But I won and that was my plan." -Sammy Mandell
  • "I thought I had won. I piled up a good margin in the first two rounds and had Mandell in a bad way and then held him at least even the rest of the way." -Tony Canzoneri
