"Challenger Paul Pender, 159, regained his share of the middleweight championship Saturday night with a unanimous 15-round decision over British titlist Terry Downes. Downes, also 159, blood gushing from a cut on his nose and a deep gash over his left eye, was on the short end of all three score cards. Downes won only two rounds in the fight - the 1st and the 5th - and it was Pender, using his noted left jab to great advantage, on a landslide thereafter before the Boston garden crowd. Pender, like Downes, showed the 15-round strain in the last four rounds of the bout but still had enough strength to win the last round decisively. There were no knockdowns." -United Press International

  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 147-142 Pender
  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 147-137 Pender

Post-fight comment

  • "He was looking to hit me with a low left hook so I changed my attack. I was leading with my right more, following up with my left. He kept dropping his left hand on every power punch, which kind of gave it away." -Paul Pender
