Ezzard Charles 176 lbs beat Jimmy Bivins 178 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Ezzard Charles, who hopes to step into Joe Louis' job as heavyweight champion, took a long stride in that direction tonight by winning a well-fought 10 round decision over Jimmy Bivins. Appropriately, the best was saved for last. The 10th round was a dilly. Charles came out aiming for a knockout. He cut loose with everything he had, which is plenty. But Bivins, hammered by potential haymakers from both the left and the right, managed to sneak in close for some damaging blows of his own. It was a wild round, with a potential knockout riding on every punch. In the long run, it was Charles' left that did it. That left, which packs plenty of authority, kept pounding away on Bivins' nose. It was an effective weapon, and Charles used it well." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-2-2 Charles
