Zhong, 20-4-1, 11 knockouts, outpointed Javier Martinez Resendez of Mexico by 12 round decision on points. Resendez fell to 13-4-2 with six knockouts. In his only other world title opportunity, Zhong lost a close 12 round decision to then WBC World Flyweight Champion Daisuke Naito in Tokyo, Japan, on May 26, 2009. Zhong's previous 24 bouts were all at flyweight or light flyweight.
- The WBC paid Boxrec # 4 Filipino southpaw WBC Mimimumweight Silver champion Denver Cuello a fee to allow Zhong to fight for the title. Cuello, having previously won the eliminator, became the mandatory first defense for Zhong in early 2013.
