Jack Dempsey Is Too Fast For His Opponent
The Ogden Standard, May 4, 1916
Last night, at the Alhambra Theater, before a large crowd of 2,000 people, Jack Dempsey of Salt Lake City, gave Terry Keller, claimant of the light-heavyweight championship, the hardest beating of his career, in ten furious rounds. The decision of Referee Tom Painter of Evanston, Wyoming, met the approval of the crowd and was cheered for several minutes. ... The main event started out with a rush. Dempsey landed at will. The fighters were in good condition, but something was wrong with Keller. Either he was stalling or else he is out of his class. His punching was of a novice's style and not of a finished fighter. Dempsey rocked Keller repeatedly with left jabs, right crosses and uppercuts. He outclassed Keller at every stage of the game. Seven of the ten rounds went to Dempsey, two were even and one round was Keller's. In the fourth round, Dempsey opened Keller's right eye and from then on Dempsey hammered Keller's face at will. The seventh round went to Keller as one of his haymaker punches reached Dempsey's body and Keller scored a knockdown. The last three rounds were fast and both men tried for a knockout. Dempsey completely closed both of Keller's eyes and Keller was all but out at the final bell.
