Jack Dempsey beat Fred Saddy by KO in round 1 of 8
- Date: 1918-03-16
- Location: Phoenix A.C., Memphis, Tennessee, USA
Notes
(Saddy fought as "Jack Smith"). It was reported that a match between Dempsey and Jack McCarthy was called off because McCarthy had been knocked out under an assumed name some days before at Columbus, Ohio. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Dempsey-Saddy "fight" lasted only one minute and 30 seconds. Saddy was down three times. Promoter Billy Haack of the Phoenix A.C. apologized publicly for this fiasco, saying that he had relied on Manager Larney Lichtenstein of Milwaukee to provide a good opponent for Dempsey. Saddy (or "Soddy" as he is called in the Commercial Appeal) had served as a sparring partner for Dempsey in Milwaukee when Dempsey was training for his fight with Bill Brennan.
