A crowd of over 38,000 fans packed the Alamodome to watch the semi-main event on the Saul Alvarez vs. Austin Trout card between hard-punching Omar Figueroa and Abner Cotto. Figueroa made quick work of the previously unbeaten Cotto by flooring him twice in the opening round. With the win, Figueroa claimed a pair of championship titles.
Figueroa applied pressure from the opening bell and caught Cotto with a combination highlighted by a left hand to the body that sent Cotto backwards and subsequently, knocked Cotto down at two minutes into the first round.
A thudding left to the body by Figueroa in the final seconds of the first round sent Cotto down for the second time. Cotto remained on all fours as the referee reached the count of ten.
