Mustafa Wasajja beat Bob Foster by RTD in round 5 of 8

  • Date: 1978-02-09
  • Location: Idraetshuset, Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Referee: Leif Schmuecker

"Light heavyweight Bob Foster left Denmark on Friday in a blaze of scandal and controversey after quitting during a Thursday night fight. Danish promoter Mogens Palle said he and the Danish Boxing Union were withholding part of Foster's purse after the Albuquerque, N.M., deputy sheriff gave up after five rounds of a scheduled eight rounder against Mustapha Wassaja of Uganda. The 39 year old former world champion was booed by the Danish crowd and climbed through the ropes as programs and other objects showered down upon him, hurled by outraged fans. Foster hardly put up any fight in the first four rounds. After the 4th he refused to come out of his corner, claiming a hand injury. But the booing was so intense that Foster appeared to relent and went one more round before calling it quits. Palle insisted on an x-ray of Foster's left hand and said neither that nor other medical examinations showed any injury." -Associated Press
