Solomon Was Game and Lasted the Ten Rounds Very Well.

Jos. Gans, colored, defeated Solomon English on the Monumental Theatre stage last night in three rounds, though the set-to lasted nearly ten rounds, when it was stopped by police interference. Gans was the heavier, taller, and had the longer reach. The hitting powers of the two men could not well be compared, as Gans landed so many blows in the first three rounds as to have an effect on English's strength.

There was the biggest attendance which has been present at any of the bouts this season.

Many thought it was all up with English when the fourth round was called. It was not so, however, and English finished the round with one of his eyes closed, but he was otherwise all right. The fifth round finished with English apparently weak. Gans from this out went slowly. Knowing he had the fight won he grew careless. English at the finish of the round got in a stiff face blow.

The seventh round was not fought hard. Though Gans landed many blows on English's closed eye the latter kept on sparring, and at the finish of the round landed a good body blow. This encouraged English's friends and they applauded him.

Thus encouraged, he started in the eighth round with some confidence. He ended the round weak. The ninth round was short and was all in Gans's favor. Gans was punching English about in the latter part of the deciding round, when the police stopped the bout. English was solidly game throughout. Chris Johnson was referee.
