"Licho Guerrero of Tijuana, Mexico, was awarded a knockout victory - his 6th straight at the Olympic Auditorium - with one minute left in a scheduled 10 rounder Friday night against substitute boxer Rodolfo Gonzalez. Guerrero dropped Gonzalez, Guadalajara, Mexico, to one knee in the 1st round, but Gonzalez kept going in the bout despite bleeding from the nose and mouth only to lose when he sustained a deep gash under his left eye in the 10th round." -United Press International

• Gonzalez replaced Danny Valdez when the world's 7th ranking featherweight was examined and found to have a bruised shoulder at the noon weigh-in.
• The Olympic Boxing Club had advanced Valdez $500.00 of his purse only two days earlier.
• Gonzalez replaced Valdez on four hours notice. Gonzalez had been contracted to fight the semi-windup on promoter Joe Louis' card at the Moulin Rouge the following Monday.
• The L.A. Times wrote: "Van, the lone official, had it scored 11-1 going into the final round, but, surprisingly, it wasn't as one-sided as the score might indicate. Gonzalez rocked Guerrero in the 4th and 5th rounds with looping rights and, despite his inexperience, kept trying and landing all the way until referee Frankie Van stopped it."
