"Through most of the ten rounds Gavilan handled his heavier rival as he would a sparring mate. He hit the Villager from all angles and with every conceivable blow, not excepting the "bolo," which is a Gavilan invention, a combination ripping right uppercut and swing.... In the crowd of 9,934 that witnessed the battle, a bristling, savage struggle despite the convincing margin by which Gavilan won, there were few who disagreed with the decision. The power in Young's dangerous left hook was neutralized by Gavilan's crouching, weaving style and with this weapon spiked, Young's effectiveness was lost and his weight advantage became a handicap. He couldn't match the rapid-fire punching of the Cuban. Gavilan's superior speed and greater skill with a straight left gave him the first four rounds beyond question. Young missed awkwardly with what were intended as his most damaging punches.... Early in the second round Gavilan rocked Young with a right to the jaw. Young almost went through the ropes missing a left hook later. In the third Young was cautioned for striking foul with a left for the body. ... In the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth rounds Gavilan did the most effective punching. Young missed, rarely striking the target. So desperate was Young in the ninth he was cautioned again for fouling. In the tenth Young tossed aside all caution and went at it hammer and tongs. Gavilan relished this sort of fighting and they fought it that way to the final bell." - James P. Dawson, The New York Times
