"Tony DeMarco, 146, the No. 1 contender for the welterweight title, sidetracked the comeback hopes of former champion Kid Gavilan, 148, by pounding out a unanimous 10-round decision over the Cuban veteran tonight at the Boston Garden. DeMarco took the best punches Gavilan could throw without budging and bounced back with sharp combinations and a quick left to gain the votes of all three officials. Gavilan's best efforts were a left hook and his famed bolo. However, those blows had little effect on the rugged DeMarco, himself a former champion. For the final minute of the 10th round the two battlers just stood facing each other and slugged away. Gavilan landed more punches but DeMarco's carried much more steam." -Associated Press
