  • 20-0 Glen Tapia opened explosively with power shots in the first minute and a half, but Kirkland survived the attack. In round two, Kirkland was pressuring Tapia with heavy shots. Tapia began to fade in the third round due to the furious toe-to-toe pace which he could not sustain. Kirkland gave tiring Tapia a brutal beating in the fourth round to the head and body with uppercuts and power shots, and referee Steve Smoger wanted to stop the contest in the corner. In the fifth, a desperate Tapia 'emptied his guns' with right hand leads which landed to try to stay in the bout, but Kirkland fired back effectively to the Tapia's head and body and Tapia was hurt. A Kirkland left uppercut followed by a straight left knocked out Tapia on his feet in the sixth, ending the contest . The six round brawl featured a high volume of punches, which the inexperienced Tapia was unable to sustain at the championship pace trainer Ann Wolfe had Kirkland set. Kirkland took the fight inside and fought his fight for the most part, and Tapia, an outside fighter, could not keep Kirkland away once James set the tempo of the bout.
