Wilfredo Gomez (39-1-1 with 39 knockouts coming in) knocked Santana, from Panama, in the second round. Santana was a Lightweight, and this fight was made to give Gomez a little more confidence before he beat Juan La Porte for the WBC featherweight title. The fight took place on December 14, 1983 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Clemente Coliseum saw some of the greatest fighters box there, including Gomez, Ali, Duran, a young Julio Cesar Chavez, Camacho, Ramirez, Rosario and Cervantes.
Incidentally, the Gomez-Santana fight has been considered as a wide mismatch by many, since Santana came in at 0-2. He retired after the Gomez fight.
