"Manuel Gonzalez appeared today to be in line for another shot at Curtis Cokes' welterweight title. The Houston fighter took a 10 round decision over 9th ranked welterweight Charley Shipes of Oakland, Calif., Tuesday night in Sam Houston Coliseum. Gonzalez received the unanimous nod despite being knocked down for a mandatory eight count in the 3rd round by a right counter from Shipes. After the knockdown, Gonzalez took charge and added up points with fancy footwork, countering hooks and jabs. Gonzalez hurt Shipes in the 7th with a right. Shipes' knee touched canvas and he clutched Gonzalez around the knees, but there was no count. The bell saved Shipes from further punishment." -Associated Press
