The much taller Ross worked Belloise's body in the opening round, while Belloise targeted the head of Ross. A swarm of head punches floored Ross in the 2nd round, for a seven count. Ross continued to take a pouding in the 3rd round, and more so in the 4th round. In the 5th round, more headshots, particularly left hooks, hurt Ross; forcing him to sit on the ropes. The referee stepped in between the two boxers, but did not issue a count on Ross. As Belloise appeared ready to pounce on the helpless Ross, referee Eddie Joseph stepped in.
