  • "Rory Calhoun gives hard body punches the credit for setting up his TKO victory over Britain's Johnny Sullivan here last night. The White Plains, N.Y., slugger, currently ranked No. 6 among the middleweight contenders, had Sullivan a dazed and helpless target when referee Jackie Davis halted the fight nine seconds into the 8th round. It was a straight right to the jaw that floored Sullivan for a three-count which the bell interrupted at the end of the 7th, and it was a trio of rights to the jaw that preceded the stopping of the scheduled 10-rounder. But Sullivan himself said in the dressing round that the hardest punch was a left hook that landed squarely into his stomach early in the 7th. After that it was just a matter of time of how long before Calhoun would finish his game opponent." -Associated Press

    • Calhoun was penalized rounds 4 & 7 for low blows.

    Post-fight comment

    • "Those body punches wear you down. Most of those European fighters have good defenses, but they keep guarding their head. I went for his body and figured he'd start slowing up from those punches." -Rory Calhoun
