Gaspar Ortega 151 lbs beat Gene Poirier 151 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Welterweights Gaspar Ortega of Mexico and Gene Poirier of Niagara Falls, N.Y., will be rematched for another TV fight at St. Nicholas Arena next month because of Monday night's close 10 rounder, won by Ortega on a majority decision. Promoter Teddy Brenner said today, 'I'll bring them back again on July 16 or 23.' Ortega, whose long-range counter-punching and superiority in exchanges earned the verdict, was favored at 6-5 in a last minute betting switch. It was an excellent fight, in which each bled from the nose - Ortega profusely. And Poirier also suffered a bruised nick under his right eye. Each was knocked back on his heels several time. Poirier was groggy in the 6th and Ortega's knees were buckled in the 7th." -United Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard (the UP did not submit a card) - 5-4-1 Poirier
  • Ortega was a substitute for Danny Giovanelli, who sprained an ankle in training.
  • Although Teddy Brenner wanted to rematch the two fighters on July 16th or the 23rd, the fight never came to pass. Instead, Poirier was matched on the 23rd with his original opponent Danny Giovanelli.
