Summary
"Rugged Rafael Herrera eliminated Rodolfo Martinez, at least temporarily, from bantamweight title contention Wednesday night at the Forum by gaining a majority 12 round decision. Herrera never changed expression as he kept boring in and throwing punches with both hands. Herrera scored a knockdown with a left hook in the 2nd round, but Martinez appeared to be more surprised than hurt. He dropped to one knee, then arose immediately. However, he spent the next five rounds dancing in and out, hardly throwing a punch. Herrera piled up points with a left jab and overhand right until the 8th when Martinez turned tiger for a couple of rounds and punished his opponent with solid shots to the head. But in the 10th, Martinez, apparently tired, went into his dance again. In the 11th, Martinez had his one chance to win it. He exploded a left hook on the jaw and Herrera reeled into the ropes. But Martinez did not appear to have the strength to score a knockout and by the end of the round Herrera was on the attack again." -The L.A. Times
