- The news caught boxing journalists by surprise.[3] The fight was highly criticized by the Associated Press: Eddie Brietz wrote that "Joe Louis vs. Jack Roper is a laugh if there ever was one", while Robert Myers wrote "For the benefit of those who don't know, Jack Roper is best described as a human being". United Press pointed out that Roper was not ranked by the National Boxing Association (NBA).[4][5][6]
