"Frankie Ryff, boxing's 'Rookie of the year' in 1954, cleverly protected a gashed left eye and breezed to a unanimous 10 round decision over Joey Lopes of Sacramento, Calif., last night in a nationally televised bout from Olympia Stadium. Ryff suffered a cut left eye in the 2nd round. Trainer Dan Floria patched the gash and Ryff, nimbly darting around the ring, kept clear of Lopes until the 8th, when the cut was again opened. By this time, however, Ryff had piled up enough points and merely waited out the final minutes of the fight." -Associated Press
