Notes

  • Bouttier was knocked down in the 6th round.
  • Bouttier was unable to answer the bell for the 13th round.

"Jean-Claude Bouttier, who had been rated the No. 1 contender for Carlos Monzon's middleweight title, was battered to a standstill, unable to leave his corner and kept there by his manager, Jean Bretonnel, after the gong had sounded for the 13th round. Nobody has ever knocked Monzon down and in the 6th it didn't seem probable that Bouttier would even get close. The Frenchman was knocked into the ropes early in the round and Monzon moved in. Then Bouttier's left exploded and Monzon wobbled. Suddenly Bouttier was the hunter. However, Monzon then put together a flurry which sent Bouttier down. The Frenchman was in no great shape to go hunting and by the 8th it became a question of whether he could even sneak in another hook before Monzon beat his head off. After a staggering series of straight rights near the end of the 12th, Bouttier was out on his feet. Bretonnel would not let him off his stool when the bell rang for the 13th." -Ring Magazine, September 1972 issue

  • Purses: Monzon - $130,000, Bouttier - It was only reported that he received more than Monzon.

Post-fight comment

  • "I am sure that Jean-Claude would have won if the referee had stopped Monzon from hitting him on the back of the head and leaning back over the ropes each time Bouttier had him cornered. Monzon was right out of the ring every time he got on the ropes. It was completely illegal." -Jean Bretonnel, Bouttier's manager
