Lampkin was knocked down in the 2nd round. In the 3rd round, Shields knocked him out with a left hook. Lampkin was on the canvas for several minutes with medical attention, before an ambulance was called. He was able to sit up and talk, as the ambulance arrived. He was subsequently hospitalized and retired.

• Lampkin had been banned from boxing by the New York and California Athletic Commissions after his loss to Vilomar Fernandez the previous February.
